Managerial Routines

In order to effectively instruct a class it is necessary to have several management strategies in place.  These routines should cover equipment use, student and teacher positioning in the class, discipline strategies and should promote effective use of time.

Maximize Your Time

  • Set out expectations for the lesson.
  • Avoid elimination games to keep all children on task.
  • Be prepared and have several activities planned...be creative.
  • Teacher modifies rules (playing area, number of players, equipment, conditions) to achieve high activity and maximum effort.
Class Routines

  • Establish an entry routine with your class so that they are aware of what is expected of them. For example, when children enter the gym, have a warm-up game that they can immediately engage in while waiting for their classmates.
  • Have children keep equipment still while giving instruction or demonstration.
  • Gather class together at end of lesson for comments.
Discipline Strategies

  • Deal with discipline problems so as not to disrupt activity of the rest of the class.
  • Do not ignore conflict and problems.
  • Establish set, consistent consequences for common disciplinary problems.
